IMHO: Singtel's New Data Plan, Speed and More

Singtel has implemented it's new data plan last July 1, 2012 for new and recontracting customers which offer less data bundle but more number of SMS.

I think this is a really bad move by Singtel. Here are the reasons why I think some of the subscribers are so mad about this changed:

First, they increase the number of sms to compensate for the small data bundle. Oh come on, please tell me that you atleast did a study of some sort that a lot of people still use SMS to justify your increase on the number of allowable SMS on each plan. I can't even used my 500 sms per month. How am I supposed to use 900 sms monthly? Maybe you can increase the number of talk time.

Second, it's ok to cut the bundled data but slashed it from 12gb to 2gb? Seriously? 2gb? Then your site says that 2gb is more than enough but tell us ways on how we can save on data by manually syncing our email, by connecting to wifi, by switching off our cellular data when not in use. So can you tell me what's the meaning of "You'll realise that your lifestyle really doesn't have to change." when clearly everything has to change??? I think if you cut the data to 5gb, consumers will accept this. I myself use the streaming radio on my phone aside from the seldom youtube-ing and I think 2gb won't suffice. We buy a smartphone, subscribe to a data plan, so that we can use it on the go, anytime we want without having to find a wifi hotspot just to stream a video on youtube.

Third, I know this move will help your congested network but maybe adding some more investment on the capacity of your network might do the job as well. The demand for mobile data is increasing and so should the capacity of your network. I can't even get decent internet speed when I'm at home and sometimes I just want to throw my phone because a webpage will take forever to load. I mean these changes are for a better network, less congestion, but I still have the same dial-up speed even when my phone has a 3G signal.

Now I'm contemplating of switching to other network because of this. I just hope the other telcos won't follow this or atleast offer us a choice between more data bundle versus the number of free SMS.
